Read a detailed story below in Spanish (first) and English (second).

About Ámbar
We used to live in Caracas, Venezuela, and Ámbar was treated at the Caracas Children’s Orthopedic Hospital. She was born at La Trinidad Clinic in Caracas, where she underwent surgery to close lumbosacral myelomeningocele at two days old. She spent a month hospitalized for recovery, and everything went well, although she has some aftereffects from the myelomeningocele. She does not have sphincter control, but we are working on it through pelvic floor therapy. She has difficulty walking, both with and without braces, but with braces, she has more stability.

She is 8 years old, and we have been living in Curitiba, Brazil, for four years, where she receives excellent medical care at the Pequeno Príncipe Hospital. She does not have a valve for hydrocephalus.

Her hydrocephalus is stable and does not affect her psychologically. She attends a regular school here and speaks both Spanish and Portuguese.

She practices ballet, swimming, pelvic physiotherapy, and physical therapy.

Ámbar’s Books
The idea behind the books is to have an income because, even though, thank God, Ámbar receives her medical care here, I still have to pay for our house, buy food, and cover all other expenses. And I can’t work because it’s just the two of us here.

Kairusam Paz (mom to Ámbar) created a series of books in three languages: Portuguese, Spanish, and English to help support her family after they immigrated to Brazil. Look up Kairusam Paz on Amazon or follow these links (Learn, Dream, and Make It Happen and The Ballerina in Pink Boots) to purchase a copy!

Ámbar’s Youtube
The YouTube channel is called “Ámbar más allá del ballet” (Ámbar Beyond Ballet).

These are Ámbar’s real adventures, but in animated drawings, showing her daily life. That’s what the YouTube channel she wanted me to create is about. I also made her a coloring book for kids. We only have three videos—we’re just getting started.

Ámbar has several great videos about her family’s immigration from Venezuela to Brazil as well that can be viewed on her Instagram: @kaimasdos.
